What Makes A Durable Ring?
I don't know about you, but when my now-husband asked me to send ideas for what engagement rings I liked, I was so overwhelmed by the different beautiful designs, I didn't even think about what makes a ring that lasts.
Well you all know the story of Steel & Grace, let me share what I've learned along the way!
1. Band Width & Thickness (Off the Finger):
- Under UK Size N: Minimum 1.8mm width and 1.8mm thickness for durability.
- UK Size N and Above: Minimum 2mm width and 1.9mm thickness for structural integrity, especially for larger ring sizes and large stones.
2. Settings for Stones:
💍Cathedral Setting: Features elegant arches that cradle the centre stone, combining strength with a timeless look.
💍Bezel Setting: The stone is encased in a metal rim (full or half), offering superior protection against impacts and chips.
💍Hidden Halo Setting: Adds a styling yet supportive gallery rail under the main stone, offering both security and elegance.
3. Prongs for Stability:
💍Main Stones: At least 4 prongs to ensure a secure hold.
💍Accent Stones (e.g. wedding bands): Minimum of 3 prongs per stone, preventing movement or loss.
4. Recommended Gemstones for Durability:
💍Moissanite: A tougher, chip-resistant alternative to diamonds, ideal for daily wear and active lifestyles.
💍Diamonds: Though the hardest mineral, diamonds are brittle and benefit from protective settings like full/half bezels or cathedral designs.
5. Special Additions for Strength:
💍Gallery Rail: These provide additional reinforcement for the band and prevent bending.
💍Split Shanks: Offers a broader base for support, reducing stress on individual parts of the ring.
